Working as part of a design team including architect, structural engineers and site project teams, 442 were appointed as catering design specialists to create a new 250 cover cafe and lounge concept for the University of Edinburgh, located within a new-build student services and accommodation block. We were briefed to transform the University’s traditional ‘canteen’ style offer into an experience that competes comfortably with the high street - from the operation and customer flow through to menu, setting and environment. The space is designed to offer opportunities for students, staff and the general public to quickly grab ‘n’ go or to sit in and relax in a variety of appealing settings within the space - from communal bench seating to lounging soft seats. The high impact servery unit forms the heart of the space, where the food offer feels abundant and visually appealing, with the service model allowing for quick and efficient service.

442 created initial concepts, plans and visuals, carrying these through to detailed drawings for client approval and construction, liaised with the client team throughout the project to ensure stakeholders were brought along on the journey and feedback was gathered at key points in the process.
